Resumen

Si bien la trata de esclavos llevados por buques de Estados Unidos hacia el Río de la Plata duró solo doce años, entre 1798 y 1809, los comerciantes estadounidenses enviaron más cautivos directamente desde África a Buenos Aires y Montevideo (en lugar de hacerlo de manera indirecta a través de Brasil) que cualquier otro grupo nacional de mercaderes entre 1777 y 1812. Este artículo examina las conexiones de la trata de esclavos con la circulación de plata hispanoamericana más allá de las colonias españolas, en tanto la plata fue el principal medio de intercambio de las transacciones realizadas por este tráfico. Esta historia también conecta el Atlántico con el Pacífico, pues buena parte de los cautivos que desembarcaron las naves esclavistas de Estados Unidos en el Río de la Plata se redirigió hacia Lima a través de Chile.
