Abstract
The article discusses how social dialogue can contribute to improving labour
relations, considering that it is a basic element of the agreement that must be reached between the business world and trade unions, and sometimes with the government, in order for this to be possible. It starts from the definitions of social dialogue, whether bipartite or tripartite, given at both international and European Community level. It then examines social dialogue in Spain, distinguishing between the different phases from the transition to democracy to the present day. It also looks at the reality of social dialogue in Catalonia as a specific example at the regional level. It concludes with some reflections on issues that should be given special attention both in the dialogue between trade unions and employers’ organisations and when government representatives are involved.
