Abstract
This article explores the contexts of the first known project for the application of the Swiss model of foreign industry in Spain, which was carried out in the mountain of Montserrat from 1877. For this purpose, the documentary collection of the company Ferrocarriles de Montaña a Grandes Pendientes (FMGP), the promoter of the project, is used. This documentation, unpublished, allows to weave a thread with the different evidences on the evolution of the Catalan Catholicism in the frame of a general conflict, in the last years of the nineteenth century and the first years of the twentieth century, that has gathered the extensive bibliography on the subject. It also weaves it with the bibliography that has dealt with the symbolic foundations of Catalanism, since Montserrat synthesized this cultural and political phenomenon. The result specifies with greater precision the consolidation of Montserrat as a Catholic destination for the masses, and its fit with the directing agents of Catalan nationalism, until 1924.
