Abstract

For several decades now, historical studies of sexuality have drawn on a growing body of work that has incorporated an urban perspective into the analysis of our sexual past. Influenced by a fruitful combination of social constructionism and the spatial turn, their starting point is that the city, and particularly the large cities that emerged in the early 20th century, operated as an active force and a constituent part of the historical formation of sexuality. Although still in its infancy in our historiography, this current of studies has shown strong potential for illuminating neglected areas, formulating novel questions, bringing new sources to the fore, and overcoming the theoretical, thematic, and geographical frameworks in which the history of sexuality has primarily moved. This article aims to be a sample of the results offered by adopting this perspective for the study of prostitution in Madrid during its first regulatory period (1847-1935).
